Ghulam Ali (born 1940) is a famous Pakistani ghazal singer of the Patiala Gharana. He was born in the village of Kaleke in the Sialkot district of Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). He belongs to a musical family; his father was a vocalist and a sarangi player who gave him early training.
Ali started singing for Radio Lahore in 1960. Ghulam Ali's father named him "Ghulam Ali" after Bade Ghulam Ali. Along with singing ghazals, Ghulam Ali composes music for his ghazals too.

Though from Pakistan, Ghulam Ali remains as popular in India as in Pakistan. He burst into the Indian scene with a Hindi film song "Chupke Chupke raat din" in B. R. Chopra's movie, 'Nikaah'. Other popular ghazals include "Hungama hai kyon barpaa" and "Awaargi, yeh dil yeh paagal Dil mera", and many more. On being questioned about Pakistani pop groups, Ghulam Ali replied, "Frankly, I am really bewildered at their style of singing. How can you sing a song by running and jumping around the stage? The stage is meant for performing not for acrobatics."

Ali has also sung some beautiful ghazals like Kina Kina Timro Tasveer, Gajalu Tee Thula Thula Aankha, Lolaaeka Tee Thula and Ke Chha Ra Diun in Nepali language with Narayan Gopal, a wellknown Nepali singer, and composer Deepak Jangam. These songs were compiled in an album entitled Narayan Gopal, Ghulam Ali Ra Ma, and are popular among Nepali music lovers to this day. Click here for more information.

Geeta Dutt was born into a rich zamindaar's family as Geeta Ghosh Roy Chowdhuri in Faridpur, East Bengal in 1930. In 1942, her parents shifted to a Dadar apartment in Bombay when she was twelve. Over there in their modest flat at Dadar, composer/music director Hanuman Prasad, overheard her singing casually and agreed to impart her training in singing. He launched her in a chorus song in Bhakht Prahlad (1946), where she sang only two lines. But her rendering of those two lines stood out and astonished everybody in the recording studio. Her major assignment was in the following year with Do Bhai. The music of that film clicked in a big way and Geeta became a top playback singer. More info

Legendary Lyricist : Prem Dhawan (1923 - 1996)

Prem Dhawan made his debut as a lyricist in Ziddi produced by Bambay Talkies and went on to pen hit songs like Mera Rang De Basanti Chola and Seene Mein Sulagate Hain Arman. Born at Ambala in Haryana in 1923, Dhawan wrote songs for over 300 films. He was also the choreographer of films like Goonj Uthi Shehnai, Do Bigha Zameen, Arzoo and Naya Daur. He also produced short films under his Triveni Films banner. Dhawan was awarded Padmashree in 1970. (PTI).

Prem Dhawan's compositions include '"Ae Mere Pyare Watan" , died of a massive heart attack at Jaslok Hospital, Mumbai.

Vasant Desai(1914-1974)

Vasant Desai was the composer who could easily pivot the various situations of life around his simple and classy tunes. He was a man of great musical insight. He could easily grasp the situations and put them successfully in his songs. Who can forget his composition, 'Aei Maalik Tere Bande Ham..', in fact, Punjab govt. declared it as a part of morning prayers in their schools.

Vasant Desai was born in 1914. In his early days, he used to act in silent films. Prabhat's Khooni Khanjar (1930) was his first film as an actor. He also used to sing songs in films. He sang his first song, 'Jay Jay Rajadhiraaj..' in Ayodhaya Ka Raja (1932). In 1934, he sang a popular 'Kajri', 'Barsan Laagi..' in Amrit Manthan. He sang many songs in those times in various films. But that was not his destiny, his career took a turn with 1939's Aadmi. He could not managed to get the role of Hero in the film, so gave up acting and started his training in music, under Ustaad Aalam Khan and Ustaad Inaayat Khan.

He became an assistant of music director Govind Rao Tembe. He did Our India, Monsoon, Amar Bhoopali, Shobha Aankh Ki Sharam and Mauj with him as an assistant. He got his first opportunity in 1943 to work independently for Shantarm's Shakuntala. The film was a major hit of those times. It ran for 104 weeks. After Shakuntala's overwhelming success, Vansat Desai became a part of V. Shanatram's Rajkamal Studio. He gave unforgettable music for Shantaram's Do Aankhen Barah Haath and Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje. He became very popular in his early career as a music director. He composed music for 14 films in the 1940's. Parvat Pe Apna Dera (1944), Subhadra (1946), Jivan Yatra (1946), Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani (1946), Matwala Shaayar Raam Joshi (1947), Uddhar (1949) were some of his popular films.

In 1955, 1956 and 1957, Rajkamal's Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje, Toofan Aur Diya, Do Aankhen Baarah Haath, got released. Desai worked very hard for the music of these films. He gave all sort of music in these films, successfully. He used pure classical, folk and thematical music perfectly for these films. Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje was purely based on dance theme, so he composed classical dance tunes. He used the voice of great vocalist Ustaad Amir Khan for the title song of the film.

In 1960's he did comparatively less number of films but he managed to maintain his style and melody of his tunes. Use of classical music was clearly visible in his music in this era. The decade saw the release of Pyar Ki Pyaas, Raahul, Yaadein, Ladki Sahayadri Ki, Bharat Milaap, Aashirwad and few more. Yaadein (1964), was a movie with only one artist and the story was portrayed with the help of background music and dialogues. It was a big task for Vasant to compose the music for 'Yaadein', yet he came out with perfect background score and a perfectly composed 'Dekha hai sapna koi..' sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Later, in 1974, when Gulzar made Achaanak, which again was a songless film, he called Vasant Desai for its music. The film has a great weightage for background music and Gulzar knew that Vasant was the perfect man for the job. Vasant did a great job as expected, for the film.

Vasant Desai used the voice of veteran Ashok Kumar for his film Aashirwaad (1968). He put his best effort for the music of Aashirwaad. 'Ek thaa bachpan..' sung by Lata Mangeshkar was composed in Raag Pooriya Ghanashri. He composed "Jeevan Se Lambe Hai Bandhu..' sung by Manna Dey in Raag Shiv Ranjini. Vasant introduced Vani Jayram in Guddi (1970) as a playback singer. 'Bole Re Papihara..' sung by Vani is one of a few remembered rain songs, till date. He introduced Dilraaj Kaur in Rani Aur Laalpari (1975), as a playback singer.

Vasant believed in quality and not quantity, therefore he composed music for only 46 films. He never felt at ease while composing qawallis or ghazals. He always gave his heart for classical music. His favourite poets were Majrooh Sultanpuri, Kavi Pradeep, Gulzar and Pt. Narendra Sharma. He left us in 1974, with his 'Yaadein'.

Talat Mahmood (February 24, 1924 -- May 9, 1998)

Talat Mahmood was an Indian Bollywood singer and actor. He was a recipient of Padma Bhushan. He was famous for his ghazals, resulting in a title of "king of ghazals" bestowed upon him by fans and critics [1].

Talat has often been described as a singer with a silky voice. His voice never suited loud songs, songs that demanded a high-pitched voice. Shouting or screaming didn't suit him and so he avoided those kinds of songs too. He only sang soft, romantic, lyrical, ghazals.

Even though Talat sang hundreds of hits, some of his most memorable songs from Hindi cinema are;

Himesh Reshammiya's "weak-willed" and jaded musical offering in APNE proves too "middle-of-the-road" to match the gargantuan celebrity strength plus its multi-faceted grandeur. It fairs poorly on novelty quotient with its strident and recurring compositions with an exception of melody in Sonu Nigam's "Apne". Himesh Reshammiya exhausts himself to extreme again as a vocalist cum composer and his musical fatigue cripples the promising endeavors. The flashy visual spectacles and choreographic flamboyance of the tracks can be the redeeming factor but the disappointment continues from Reshammiya's clan for his tediously driven toil.

It will not be easy to shut down these download sites. Especially since the Internet has no borders, it will be an almost impossible task, to get all the countries in the world to agree on how to legislate Internet downloading.

Another attack on music and movies download sites comes from, what I call, seasoned Internet users. They claim these download sites are a scam, because they charge for something you can get for free.

Well, you could get it for free, that is true. These download sites provide you with soft ware to search for and download files from the Internet. They provide you with soft ware to burn these files on a cd should you wish to do so.

All this software is available for free on the Internet, but for an Internet novice it could be a daunting task to look for this kind of soft ware, to decide which soft ware to use, how to use it.On top of that they have to make sure that they do not download spy ware, ad ware or what ever. Joining a download site and have all the info in one place is not a bad option for most of them. Another advantage is the fact that these download sites provide a help desk for their members.

Is it a scam if you provide info that people could get for free elsewhere?

Consider this.

You are looking for a telephone number, so you look it up in the phone book.

Say you do not have the right phone book, you can go out looking for it.

You probably can find this free info in the library.

You can also pick up the phone and ring an information service.

They will provide you with this free info and they will charge you for it.

So, is this information service a scam?

I do not think so, and I also do not think that the music and movies download sites are a scam.

Once you have joined, test out everything, especially their helpdesk.

Mukesh Chand Mathur (July 22, 1923–August 27, 1976), popularly known as Mukesh and nicknamed The Man With the Golden Voice, was one of the finest male playback singers of Bollywood, along with Mohammed Rafi and Kishore Kumar.

Mukesh's voice was noticed by Motilal (a popular actor in Hindi films, also a distant relative of Mukesh) when he sang at his sister's wedding. Motilal took him to Bombay, let him stay with him and even arranged for singing lessons for him. During this period, Mukesh managed to bag a role in a Hindi film, Nirdosh (Innocent) (1941). He got his break as a playback singer in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar (First Look). The first song he sang for a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne De (If the heart burns, let it burn) , which was incidentally picturised on Motilal.

He is best known for the songs he sang as a playback singer for Raj Kapoor, a legendary actor/director of Bollywood in the 1950s and 1960s.

In 1974, Mukesh received a National Award for the song Kain baar yoon bhi dekhaa hai from Rajnigandha (1974), and Filmfare Awards for the songs Sab Kuch Seekha in the movie Anari (1959), Ganga Ram Ki Samajh in Pehchaan (1970), Jai Bolo in Be Imaan (1972) and Kabhie Kabhie in the film of the same name (1976).

Shakeel Badayuni (August 3, 1916 - April 20, 1970) was an accomplished Urdu poet, lyricist and songwriter of the 1950s and 1960s.

Shakeel Badayuni was born on August 3, 1916 in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Mohammed Jamaal Ahmed Sokhta Qadiri wanted him to study hard to have a good career, thus he arranged Arabic, Urdu, Persian, and Hindi tuition for Shakeel at home. His inclination towards poetry was not hereditary like other shayars. One of his distant relatives, Zia-ul-Qadiri Badayuni was a religious shayar. Shakeel was influenced by him and the contemporary environment of Badayun led him to Sher-o-Shayari.

When he joined Aligarh Muslim University in 1936, he started participating in inter-college, inter-university mushairas and won frequently. In 1940, at the age of 24, he married Salma, who was a distant relative of his and they had been living in a common house since childhood, however, the parda system was vogue in their family and they were not close. After completing his B.A., he moved to Dehli as a supply officer, but continued participating in mushairas, earning fame nation-wide. Those were the days of shayars who wrote about the downtrodden sections of society, their upliftment, the betterment of society and all. But Shakeel had an altogether different taste - his poetry was more often not romantic and close to heart. Shakeel used to say:

Madhushala - Amitabh Bacchan

Madhushala is a book of 135 quatrains (exact term rubaai) by Hindi poet and writer Harivansh Rai Bachchan, father of the actor Amitabh Bachchan. All the rubaaiaa (the plural for rubaai) end in the word madhushala. The poet tries to explain the complexity of life with his four instruments, which appear in almost every verse: madhu, madira or haala (wine), saaki (server), pyaala (cup or glass) and of course madhusala (pub/bar).

First published in 1935, the book still sells briskly: the present publisher of the book regularly releases 2 to 3 editions every year. When first published, it met criticism from many people for its apparent praise of alcohol. As noted in Bachchan autobiography, Mahatma Gandhi, after listening to the poems, stated that these criticisms were unwarranted.
